MEDICAL CONNECTOR LIFE CYCLE TEST FIXTURE SUMMARY
Pipeline developed a 3-up life cycle test station that accommodated dozens of different electrical connectors and measured insertion/withdrawal force data

TEAM:
Mechanical Engineer, Controls Engineer, Software Engineer, Technician

DESIGN TOOLS USED:
Solidworks, 3D Printing, LabVIEW

MARKET:
Medical Devices

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

  • Fully automated measurement of insertion & removal force
  • Fully automated action to insert and remove male connector into/out of female connector
  • Accommodate 50+ different connector styles
  • Test 3 connector sets simultaneously
  • Automate acquisition and monitoring of cycle and force data

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES

The customer needed a way to life cycle test the mechanical reliability of medical device connectors with many pins inside. They also needed a way to measure the initial insertion force as well as the final insertion force to ensure the connectors were not wearing out over time. An additional layer of challenge in the project was that the machine needed to accommodate over 50 different connector geometries.

Pipeline developed a 3-up machine with modular connector nests that allowed different styles of connector to be held in place during the insertion testing. Custom software was created in LabVIEW to control the motion and data acquisition aspects of the system. Pipeline performed all R&D, design, creation of manufacturing documentation, procurement, assembly, troubleshooting and delivered the turnkey machine to the customer along with extensive documentation, training for the customers’ operators, and a user manual.
